Located at the foot of the medieval town of Sainte-Suzanne in Mayenne, the Sainte-Suzanne Paper Mill is a treasure trove of local heritage. This water-powered mill, which is still in operation, offers a unique experience through guided tours led by Carlos Robert, one of France's last master papermakers.
During the tour, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of paper mills, which marked the history of papermaking between the 13th and 18th centuries. From cutting up old cloth to drying the sheets, each stage of production is explained and demonstrated in this water-powered mill. The tools used are faithfully reproduced from old Italian and Dutch models.
Here, everything is done by hand, using recycled rags: linen, cotton, linen blend, etc. This rare know-how means that we can produce high-quality, pure rag paper, perfectly in keeping with the traditional techniques of the past. It's a great way to discover an art that has almost disappeared, in one of the last paper mills in France.
Carlos Robert also takes you back through the history of paper, from its first appearance in Europe in the late 13th century through to the industrial revolution. It's a fascinating guided tour of a historic paper mill that will appeal to the curious and heritage enthusiasts alike.
