Discover this small town in the heart of the Erve Valley and the Saulges Caves.
Set high above the river Erve, the village of Saulges has two churches well worth a visit, particularly the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, one of the oldest religious monuments in the Mayenne. Its origins date back to Merovingian times, and you can admire some rare wooden statues.
Saulges also offers visitors a surprising natural heritage. Its winding valley contains a series of caves, including the Rochefort and Margot caves, which are open to the public.
The vegetation here is unusual for western France, with moorland and dry grassland, boxwood and juniper. For hikers, there's a path from the village down to the canyon, where you might even come across the aurochs that have been introduced to the site!
