The Boisseau causeway has existed since at least the 15th century. It was used to power a mill on the left bank. To ensure the passage of boats on the upper Mayenne, a project to build a lock at Boisseau was drawn up in 1846 by the Ponts et Chaussées engineer Leblanc. It involved simply raising the dam, demolishing the mill and digging a small canal to access the lock.
