The elder sister of Fontevraud Abbey, La Roë was founded in 1098 by Robert d'Abrissel. Discover the abbey and its founder on guided tours organised all year round by La Roë Tourisme.
The Abbaye de la Roë was Robert d'Arbrissel's first abbey, founded in 1098, and the elder sister of the Royal Abbey of Fontevrault. It was the first abbey of the order of Canons Regular founded in the diocese of Tours. Abandoned during the French Revolution, the abbey was reborn in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the reconstruction of the abbot's residence and the surviving conventual buildings.
