The Abbaye de la Roë was Robert d'Arbrissel's first abbey, founded in 1098, and the elder sister of the Royal Abbey of Fontevrault. It was the first abbey of the order of Canons Regular founded in the diocese of Tours. Abandoned during the French Revolution, the abbey was reborn in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the reconstruction of the abbot's residence and the surviving conventual buildings.
