On 15 November 1888, the Mayenne Town Council decided to build a theatre in the château gardens.
A place of ostentation and social pageantry for the Mayenne bourgeoisie, the theatre was unusual in that it had both a façade facing the town and another overlooking the park.
Through the decorations on the facades, the architect Fernand Hélain gave the spectators an idea of what they were about to see: musical instruments
musical instruments, sheet music and comedy masks.
Today, the theatre retains its original function, hosting shows, concerts and plays.
