On the programme: Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams
A land of mist and mystery, the Scottish Highlands were a dream destination for many composers. It was a trip to the Scottish Highlands, for example, that inspired Felix Mendelssohn to write the stirring romanticism of his Symphony No. 3, born of contemplation of the ruins of a castle overgrown with ivy and wild brambles.
Another jewel to emerge from this Scottish visit, The Hebrides, like Symphony No. 3, is one of the German composer's most popular works. Steeped in the grandiose landscapes and tormented skies of the Highlands, Mendelssohn's music is neither illustrative nor folkloric, conveying more his impressions, exalted by the score.
Led by Chloé Meyzie, the 18 musicians of the Ensemble Instrumental de la Mayenne complete this journey across the Channel with The Lark Ascending. Atmospheric and majestic, this is the most frequently performed work by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, evoking with sensitivity the beauty of the living.
