Mathis Giron, a qualified architect with a Master's degree in History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture, explains how and why churches were built in Mayenne in the 19th century.
This talk, the result of research carried out as part of a dissertation on the history of architecture, provides an overview of the production of churches in Mayenne in the mid-nineteenth century. Through the figures and achievements of two architects active in the area, Eugène Hawke and Prosper Lemesle, we seek to understand how and why churches were built in Mayenne in the nineteenth century. By analysing plans and correspondence held in the Departmental Archives for three neo-Gothic buildings designed by these architects, we will be able to characterise their forms and determine whether or not they are specific to Mayenne. We invite you to rediscover the churches of Le Pas, Landivy and Saint-Rémi in Château-Gontier, which are more recent than they might seem.
