Lassay-les-Châteaux is one of the Petites Cités de Caractères (Small Towns of Character) in the Mayenne.
A veritable stronghold from the 15th century onwards, with the construction of its castle and military barracks, the town of Lassay developed considerably thanks to the textile trade.
The 15th-century fortified castle is emblematic of the military architecture of the Middle Ages. Intact, it is open to visitors during the summer season. Lassay also boasts two other châteaux, Bois Thibault (majestic ruins 1km from the town) and Bois Frou.
The town has a rich heritage, with houses dating from the 14th to 18th centuries. Narrow streets, gardens enclosed by low stone walls, wash-houses running alongside the river Lassay, shops with colourful shop-fronts, and two parks inviting you to relax: the rose garden with its 300 varieties of roses, and the medieval garden.
