EXPOSITION - Tancrède Abraham "Le sens du paysage"

  • Exhibition
Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, 2 Rue Jean Bourré, 53200 Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne
The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne presents an exhibition of engravings by Tancrède Abraham.
Born in Vitré in 1836, Tancrède Abraham moved to Château-Gontier with his family around 1851. He subsequently divided his time between Paris, where he worked with the great academic masters, and Château-Gontier, where his duties as drawing teacher and director of the municipal museum called him. A renowned landscape painter, Abraham began by painting before excelling in the art of etching. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863 and regularly took part in regional exhibitions in the west of France. Both critics and the public appreciated his works, which "create an atmosphere of calm, silence and poetry".

Tancrède Abraham drew most of his inspiration from the landscapes of the West. He published albums of engravings of Château-Gontier and Angers, painted views of Brittany and sketched ruins in Mayenne. Sometimes, he broadened his horizons and let himself be inspired by the landscapes of the Nièvre or, as here, the Doubs. This painting of the picturesque Cuisance valley, dominated in the background by the cliffs of the Jura, suggests that the artist followed in the footsteps of Gustave Courbet, who was himself a native of the region and left numerous landscapes.

From 18 May to 21 September, Wednesday to Sunday, 2pm to 6pm.
Free admission.
