Saint-Martin, a Romanesque church in Bas-Maine
The priory of Saint-Martin was founded around 1050 by Guy I of Laval. The suburb of Saint-Martin gradually grew up around the convent.
Built of Roussard sandstone, the building follows the traditional layout of many Romanesque churches. It consists of a single nave, a slightly projecting transept and a chevet with oriented chapels.
Murals dating from the 12th to 17th centuries adorn the walls of the nave and the apses of the choir and transept.
Of particular note in the choir is a calendar of months depicting agricultural work according to the seasons.
The church of Saint-Martin is closed for security reasons. It can be visited from the outside or on guided tours.
