Dom Juan... and the clowns sheds unexpected light on characters
mythical characters. Dom Juan seduces and defies, scoffs at
honour and devotion, and undermines the social, family and religious order. But in true
modern hero, he prefers to dine with death rather than fit into the
conventions. As for Done Elvire, so excessive in her
her desire for recognition, we laugh at her misfortune rather than weep.
Sganarelle, a loyal valet and a man of wit, becomes the endearing clown who
the play's humanity.
Indifferent to conformism, the clowns cross the line without taking anything
without taking anything seriously, neither life nor death. A tragic, savoury farce,
which, through its burlesque, underlines the extent to which Dom
Juan is a play about freedom, and the high price we pay to keep it...
