Fontaine-Daniel Abbey, founded in 1205 in the heart of the Salair woods, a few kilometres from Mayenne.
For almost 600 years, the monks worked on the site. During the French Revolution, the Abbey was sold as national property before being bought in 1806 by an industrial couple who set up their company there, known today as Toiles de Mayenne.
The Abbey, which has been a family home for over 200 years and is now separate from the textile company, is now protected as a Historic Monument following the listing of certain parts of the building in 1927.
You can visit the cloister and the cellar, with its remarkable vaulted stone room, during the guided tours of the village of Fontaine-Daniel offered by the Mayenne Co Tourist Office.
