Deep in Gascony, Baron de Sigognac, the last penniless heir of his illustrious family, lives alone in his Château de la Misère. One rainy night, he takes in a troupe of travelling actors. Tired of his secluded life and falling in love with the beautiful Isabelle, he decides to follow the troupe on its adventures.
He becomes Captain Fracasse after the tragic death of Matamore, and a life full of adventure begins for him, in which he will have to face many adventures, including the Duke of Vallombreuse, who is also in love with the young actress.
